Program in brief:

Upja is an agriculture focused incubation program powered by Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana - (RKVY-RAFTAAR), an initiative of Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India. Designed under the “Remunerative Approaches for Agriculture and Allied Sector Rejuvenation” initiative of the government, this scheme is structured to promote innovation and entrepreneurship within the field of agriculture production and agriculture dependent ancillary businesses.

This uniquely designed program will operate at a centrally located Pusa Krishi Incubator, a world class facility and infrastructure located at ZTM-BPD unit of Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi.

Start-ups that we are looking for:

Pusa Krishi Incubator is an agri incubator and hence we are looking for start-ups from agri sector working at an interface of technology and agriculture. We are looking for start-ups that are at pre commercialization stage with a minimum viable product (MVP) and undergoing testing and validation with the customer in the market. Startup should have an innovative component, with a technology/ product or service with a unique value preposition which is addressing an existing market need.

Program structure :

Upja is a uniquely designed incubation & business acceleration program, structured across two phases.

Phase-I : Residency-in-Incubation

An eight (8) weeks intensive "residency- in-incubation" period, where the selected startups will be based at the Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi. This phase of the program is designed to focus on some of the fundamental aspects critical for agribusiness. The key aspects and benefits of this phase will have a significant focus on:

  • On campus mentoring by industry experts
  • Classroom sessions on intellectual property (IP), contracts, other legal aspects
  • Design Thinking workshops
  • Product Design & Market Assessment
  • Valuation & Fund Raising

In addition to this, the Pusa Krishi Incubator team will also facilitate and support in market connects for the selected startups during Phase 1. The effort through this phase will be to ensure right product market fit, strong team, business connects, and the right foundation for a sustainable business.

Towards the end of Phase-1, the selected startups of this phase will make a presentation to an expert committee of subject matter experts and professionals. This committee of experts will evaluate the performance of the startups through the course of phase 1 and shortlist startups ready for acceleration in Phase-2 of the program.

Phase-II: Business acceleration & Funding support

Phase 2 of the program, “Business acceleration & Funding Support”, is an extremely focused 'high growth' phase of the program, designed for the startups shortlisted from phase 1. Few selected startups from this phase will be fast tracked with 'grant-in-aid' funding support of upto INR 25 Lakh, which will be made available to startups in tranches or milestones driven approach, and 'on ground' focused hand holding. .

''On ground' focused hand holding, one of the key features of this initiative will be to facilitate support through focused market access initiatives with the help of 3-4 dedicated industry mentors, scientists & professionals, lab & research facility support, and startups will be connected with deep network of investors, which include active angel investors, and venture capital funds, through the course of the program.
